Asylum 13 Medulla 60 x 6 demonstrates the decades-long evolution of the Asylum brand and shows just how refined and mature the once value-priced cigars offered by this brand have become. Made at the El Aladino factory in Danli, Honduras, this premium stick is made under the supervision of none other than Christian Eiroa, the man responsible for such incredible projects as the original Camacho blend, CLE Cigars, and, of course, the original Asylum Premium brand. The brand itself is called Medulla Oblongata, actually a 2-part release consisting of traditional parejo-shaped cigars (Medulla) and a box-pressed variant (Oblongata). The cigars were originally released in boxes of 50, with 25 of each variant, but today each one is available for purchase separately. For the blend, we have a true Honduran puro, meaning not only are the cigars entirely constructed in Honduras, but every single leaf of tobacco used in the production is grown there as well—wrapper, filler, and binder. The wrapper used for this blend is an authentic Honduran Corojo leaf that is quite like that in previous Asylum releases, the difference being that this one is from a much higher priming, meaning more flavor and just a bit more strength.
Brown and gold boxes beautifully house the tissue-wrapped vitolas, each one rolled to exacting standards and cloaked with a brown and gold Asylum 13 band. “Medulla” is plastered across the white tissue paper, denoting the blend and variant. One thing constant with Christian Eiroa and his family is that every cigar that leaves his factory from his very earliest beginnings in the cigar world is rolled precisely and tested to ensure maximum performance. This strict quality control ensures unmatched consistency for a highly satisfying experience each and every time. The soft and easy draw produces a ridiculous amount of smoke on each puff, and that smoke definitely means business. From first light, the earthy and vegetal foundation of the flavor profile is established. Subtle hints of nuts, wood, and cocoa are noticeable in the background, and the finish on each puff is long, creamy, and sweet. At first, Medulla seems to be a tame one, but as the cigar progresses, that copious amount of smoke begins to tell a different story. This blend finishes off as a medium-full-bodied flavor bomb, precisely balanced and delicious to the last puff. Made for lovers of fat cigars, the 60 x 6 is a hefty 6” x 60 vitola that offers a mellow and flavorful take on the blend.
